The underlying mechanics reveal why this asymmetry exists. Bitcoin's network difficulty adjusts to maintain a consistent block time, making hardware productivity directly proportional to the network's total hashrate. Zcash, operating with a smaller miner population and less total computational power securing it, requires lower difficulty targets to achieve comparable block times. Combined with ZEC's price relative to BTC, the revenue per terahash can indeed exceed what Bitcoin miners receive. This creates a classic incentive structure: as token prices strengthen and profitability improves, marginal miners—those operating on tight margins or in regions with moderate electricity costs—find it rational to redirect hashrate toward Zcash.

Grayscale's analysis frames this mining migration as a network security positive, suggesting that higher profitability attracts more honest actors to participate in consensus. This argument contains merit but requires nuance. More hashrate does strengthen Zcash's resilience against certain attack vectors, particularly 51% assaults. However, profitability-driven migration is inherently cyclical and mercenary. Hashrate follows arbitrage opportunities; when the reward-to-difficulty ratio shifts elsewhere, miners leave. This volatility can create periods of vulnerability between difficulty adjustments, a risk Zcash's ecosystem must actively manage through transparent communication about its long-term token economics and adoption trajectory.

The broader context matters.
