Yet the narrative around their utility often glosses over a critical friction point: the moment a recipient needs to convert digital tokens into spendable local currency. This final leg of the journey—what payment specialists call the last-mile problem—reveals why stablecoins remain tools for moving money rather than money itself in most emerging markets.

The disconnect between sender and receiver experience is fundamental. A person in the United States can send USDC to an acquaintance in Lagos with a transaction confirmation arriving in seconds, creating the illusion of a frictionless process. But the recipient now faces a different set of constraints. Their landlord expects Nigerian Naira by month's end, not digital dollars sitting in a self-custodied wallet. If they live outside major urban centers, the nearest cryptocurrency exchange willing to conduct off-ramp transactions might require a multi-hour journey. Even in well-served cities, liquidity varies wildly—some platforms impose punishing spreads on large conversions, while regulatory scrutiny has caused others to suspend services altogether. The stablecoin's stability becomes irrelevant when the infrastructure to deploy it simply doesn't exist at scale.
