The difference is speed, scale, and systemic exposure.

The appeal is undeniable. A holder of Ethereum purchased at $1,000 that appreciated to $4,000 faces a $3,000 unrealized gain. Selling one-quarter of the position to raise cash crystallizes a $750 taxable event. Borrowing against the full stack avoids this entirely. Instead of liquidating assets, the investor simply posts collateral to a protocol like Aave or Compound, receives stablecoins, and maintains exposure to upside. For taxable entities in high-rate jurisdictions, the math becomes compelling enough to drive consistent behavior.
