Breez, the Lightning Network wallet developer, has launched Glow, an open-source progressive web application designed to make Bitcoin more practical for daily transactions. The tool addresses a persistent friction point in crypto adoption: while Bitcoin serves as a durable store of value, its volatility makes it awkward for routine payments. Glow sidesteps this problem by allowing users to convert their Bitcoin holdings into stablecoins—dollar-pegged or other fiat-linked tokens—while maintaining direct custody of their private keys throughout the process.

The application leverages Spark, Breez's protocol for managing Bitcoin and stablecoins over the Lightning Network, to facilitate these conversions without requiring users to bridge assets through centralized exchanges or custodial services. By operating as a PWA, Glow works across devices without requiring installation from an app store, lowering friction for first-time users while remaining lightweight enough to function on older hardware or slower connections. Authentication uses passkeys rather than seed phrases or traditional passwords, modernizing the user experience without compromising security. This design choice reflects a broader shift in the wallet ecosystem toward credential systems that balance usability with cryptographic integrity.

What distinguishes Glow is its commitment to self-custody as the default mode. Too many stablecoin applications concentrate control with the issuer or intermediary, reintroducing counterparty risk the blockchain originally aimed to eliminate. By keeping users in sovereign control of their funds while providing seamless conversion mechanics, Glow attempts to thread a needle: offering genuine usability without sacrificing the privacy and censorship-resistance properties that draw people to Bitcoin in the first place. The open-source approach also invites community auditing and customization, allowing developers to fork the codebase for different geographic or regulatory contexts.

The release signals growing recognition that Bitcoin's layer-two scaling solutions—particularly Lightning—create economic conditions where stablecoin integration becomes natural rather than contradictory. As Lightning channels can carry both Bitcoin and other assets with minimal additional complexity, wallets will increasingly need to handle multi-asset transactions natively. Whether Glow gains traction depends partly on regulatory clarity around which stablecoins remain accessible in different jurisdictions, but the underlying infrastructure pattern—Bitcoin base layer, Lightning rails, stablecoin rails, self-custody UI—appears architecturally sound for the next phase of adoption.
