Aave's Risk Stewards are implementing a measured response to climbing demand for stablecoins across the protocol. TokenLogic has proposed increasing the first slope parameter—the rate at which borrowing costs accelerate below peak utilization—by 50 basis points across twenty stablecoin reserves, with Base USDC receiving a more modest 25 bps adjustment to reflect its already elevated pricing. For USDe, the adjustment involves realigning the base rate to 5.25%, bringing Aave's native borrow costs into closer alignment with Ethena's own staking yield. Rather than deploying these changes at once, Aave will phase in the adjustments through sequential 10 basis point increments, pausing between steps to assess market reaction and reserve dynamics.

The decision reflects genuine pressure on core stablecoin liquidity. Since early May, USDC utilization has stabilized around 92%—precisely where Aave's kink mechanism activates—and recently pushed above that threshold to 93-94%. USDT tells a more dramatic story. After declining for two months following April's liquidity stress, it has reversed course since mid-June, climbing from 76.2% to 92.5% by late August. The reserve crossed its own kink just as the month closed. This recovery isn't a passive phenomenon; it's driven by over $650 million in net new borrows originated during the recovery window. While roughly half of that demand stems from leveraged trades on Bitcoin and Ethereum, the remainder reflects intense carry-trade activity—particularly USDe borrows concentrated among large holders seeking to arbitrage yield differentials. More than 2,500 addresses have established net borrowing positions of roughly $360 million against major collateral, signaling persistent demand even at tightening rates.

The risk team's analysis suggests borrowers show limited sensitivity to rate changes within the current band, meaning modest increases are unlikely to trigger sudden deleveraging. Historically, higher supply rates have attracted fresh deposit inflows, which would expand the available liquidity buffer. This dynamic creates space for gradual parameter increases without risking a liquidity crunch. By moving in 10 bps steps rather than attempting a full 50 bps adjustment immediately, Aave creates natural inflection points where data can inform the next decision, allowing the protocol to calibrate its response to real demand elasticity rather than relying solely on theoretical models.

The broader implication is that stablecoin demand remains robust enough to test the protocol's risk infrastructure.
