Aave Horizon is expanding its collateral universe with the addition of HINC, a tokenized fund managed by Neuberger Berman that holds a diversified portfolio of high-yield corporate bonds, CLO tranches, and bank loans. The proposal marks a strategic shift for the Ethereum-based lending protocol, introducing sub-investment-grade credit exposure alongside its existing foundation of government securities and money market funds. HINC will be available as supply-only collateral, with USDC, GHO, and RLUSD available as borrowable assets against it.

The infrastructure underpinning this integration is well-established. HINC is issued as a permissioned ERC-20 token through Securitize's DS Protocol, the same technical stack already supporting Aave Horizon's VBILL Treasury Fund offering. Securitize Capital advises the fund while Neuberger Berman—an SEC-registered investment adviser managing roughly $567 billion in assets—provides sub-advisory services. A SEC-registered transfer agent maintains the master securityholder file, ensuring institutional-grade custody and compliance controls. This proven infrastructure reduces execution risk and regulatory uncertainty compared to deploying novel tokenization mechanisms.

The economic rationale for adding HINC reflects a fundamental constraint in Aave Horizon's current design. Today's collateral is concentrated in low-yield assets: tokenized Treasuries, government money market funds, and investment-grade bonds. When these instruments yield close to or below the borrowing cost of stablecoins, users lack incentive to borrow for yield generation. Lending activity becomes episodic and liquidity-driven rather than sustainable. HINC's expected returns materially exceed current stablecoin borrow rates, creating genuine carry opportunities and a rate-sensitive demand curve that encourages deeper utilization. This is the missing ingredient that transforms Horizon from a vault for inert capital into a genuine fixed-income trading venue.

The addition of sub-investment-grade credit does introduce incremental risk to the protocol—default dynamics and correlation with broader credit cycles warrant careful parameter setting and collateral weighting. However, the phased, supply-only approach and established issuer infrastructure suggest a measured onboarding process. If approved, HINC represents Aave's first serious venture into yield-driven collateral mechanics, signaling a maturation of tokenized finance infrastructure that extends beyond near-risk-free rates.
